The Gates

Twenty years in the making, The Gates was the latest large-scale art installation planned and executed by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Earlier projects included wrapping Germany's Reichstag in fabric, wrapping Paris's Pont Neuf in fabric, and surrounding islands in Florida's Biscayne Bay with...wait for it now...fabric! The Gates involved placing 7,500 17-foot tall gates, draped with "saffron"-colored fabric, throughout Central Park in New York City. Like all of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's projects, The Gates was temporary, lasting only from February 12 - 27. On February 25, Jessica and I took the train down to New York to check out this spectacle for ourselves. We agreed that the gates were best appreciated when in motion--there was a strong breeze blowing that day, and the fabric billowed beautifully as the wind whipped through Central Park. We recorded a brief video of the heavy fabric in a series of gates waving in hypnotic unison. The video was made using our digital camera, so the quality is not that great, but you should be able to get the idea.
